Stumble Inn 4 v Bromley Cross 0

Posted 18/08/2009

A good performance today from the lads which ended in a loss, with a lot of positives to come from the game. Playing a very good Stumble Inn team that went last season undefeated Bromley started the game slow, but gradually as the half went on we got more into the game and created a couple of good chances. Midway through the first half Stumble scored from a corner, this is how is stayed up until just after the hour. Stumbleís fitness levels proved the difference as they scored 3 goals later on in the second half to seal a 4-0 win.

There were a lot of positives from the game with the defence playing outstanding throughout and restricting stumble inn to very few clear cut chances. With a lot of new players the team began to gel and we began to get a foot hold in the game, with JT coming closest hitting the crossbar. A returning Andy H from injury was voted man of the match; he battled well in the middle and used the ball well.

Bromley Cross 2 V 5 Park Villa

Posted 14/10/2009

Bromley Cross slipped to a third consecutive defeat after losing to table toppers Park Villa. Si Mayho's early dismissal left Bromley Cross with a uphill task that was made harder once Park Villa took the lead with a strike from 25 yards. A goal early in the second half killed off the tie and soon a third followed for Park Villa after a excellent team move. Andy Holden pulled a goal back from the penalty spot only for Park Villa to immediately score to make it 4-1. Carl Bridge then notched his first goal for Bromley Cross smashing in from close range. Park Villa added a fifth in the dying seconds after a defensive mix up. MOTM: Andy Cartridge for a excellent, hard working performance at full back.

A good result for the lads against a very good doffcocker side. The game was pretty even through out with both sides playing some good football and having several chances. The only downside to the performance was Bromley taking the lead on three occassions and conceding three equalizers. Goal scoreres were James Thomasson, Ben Owen and Chris Evans. Man of the Match Pete Moreton.

Andy Blackburn - 300 Caps!

Posted 26/01/2010

This Sunday Andy Blackburn made his 300th appearance for the Football Club. Andy joined Masons Arms FC at its inception in 1995 and has played throughout the intervening years as the club became Egerton FC and then joined with Bromley Cross FC in 2008,

Andy played for a remarkable 15 seasons for the Open Age team before moving to the Over 35's in 2008. During those years Andy proved himself to be one of the most valuable members of the team due to his skill, dedication and reliability.

Andy's dedication to the club can be highlighted in the fact he has only missed a handful of training sessions during his 16 seasons with the club and most, if not all, of those due to holiday or injury.

Andy has also proved his consistent level of performance by winning the Player of the Year award for the 2005/06 Season.

Not only has Andy been a tremendous asset to the club on the field but he has also provided fantastic support to the club through his regular attendance at social events and by filling various roles in the running of the club.

Andy's remarkable contribution can be summed with the following statistics:
300 appearances, 25 Man of the Match, 45 Goals and only 1 yellow card.

Well done Andy. I know all those who have played with you over the years will appreciate what a fantastic contribution you have made.

2011/12 Season Review

Posted 14/05/2012

This season saw the transition from 7-a-side to 9-a-side football. Once again the team was heavily restructured in terms of personnel with 4 new faces welcomed to the Thunder family while 2 moved on to Lightning.

The tale of the season followed the basic rules for any good story...a clear beginning, middle and end! The boys improved and developed well after a torid start, taking the league by storm with a tremendous sequence of results in the middle of the season before fading to a slightly disappointing end. The season was a true rollercoater of emotions. From the lows of wondering when, and if, our first win would come to the highs of free flowing, fast passing and progressive football, of hard fought victories and of a nail-biting chase for the golden boot award to the slight anti-climax of 3 closing defeats.

This is the story of a year in the life of Bromley Cross Thunder....

The boys had a very difficult start to the season, it took a while to fully understand how to play the 9-a-side game and for the team to find its structure. However, in the course of the first 5 games - which all ended in defeat - we saw a steady improvement in performances.

In the middle of October we travelled to high flying Moss Bank and showed great skill and character to win the game 6-2 despite being pegged back to 2-2 early in the 2nd half. In an excellent all round performance Danny stole the show with a 4 goal haul. 2 hard fought games followed against future Champions Aspull and Little Lever but both ended in narrow defeats.

One win in the opening 8 games - including a defeat at A Section side Horwich St Mary's in the Chairmans Cup - didnít make great reading but we were all encouraged by the progress in performance level of the team and to prove this the boys were about to embark on a wonderful purple patch.

A 6-0 home victory against Ramsbottom was memorable for some magnificent free flowing passing football. One wonderful goal started with a roll out from Lordy and a swift passing move down the right hand side involving several players was finished off with a far post header from Matthew Hope. Next up were Moses Gate and the boys performed fantastically, going 3-0 up, scoring some great goals in the process and despite being pegged back by a late rally the boys showed great character to secure a 4-3 victory with a last minute goal. A hat-trick of wins was secured with a strong 7-1 victory at Atherton town in awful conditions. The wind gusting as strong at Thunders confidence!

2 defeats followed at Moses Gate and disappointingly at home to Moss Bank where, after taking a 2 goal lead early in the game, Thunder lost focus and slipped to defeat. This was followed with 2 hard fought and excellent victories, a double from Tom secured a 2-1 victory over Bolton County and in a crazy end to end game a goal inside the final few minutes by Jacob sealed a 1-0 victory at Little Lever. Defeat at home to a strong UCFC side was followed by a 9-2 victory over Atherton town with Paddy stealing the headlines with a 4 goal haul.

A great sequence of results, 7 wins in 10 games saw Thunder rise to 4th place in the league. Although with 3 games to go many of our opponents had several games in hand, it was not unrealistic to think Thunder could secure a top half finish, a result that was unthinkable after the start we had had.

The season ended with 3 tough games but hopes were high the boys could take one win that would secure that a top half finish. Away at Bolton County Hurricanes Thunder conceded to a great goal but further soft goals from our perspective left us with a 4-0 defeat. Champions elect Aspull brought a 100% record to St. Johns and in a tight first half Thunder had the champs rattled. A goal on the stroke of half time changed the game and Aspull ran out 4-0 winners. In the final game of the season the equation was simple, win to finish 6th. Unfortunately the boys did not turn up and slipped to a heavy defeat.

On reflection it was a solid season. After the start we had to even avoid relegation could be seen as a great achievement. However the boys showed during the middle of the season that they can be a great team. Hardworking, disciplined and full of skill we were a match for any team in the league. The lessons to take away from this season are belief and desire. With the right attitude and approach to the game there are no limits to what we can achieve. Well done boys, remember the positives and learn from the negatives. Roll on next season.
