Match Report
With John St suffering from the recent downpours we reversed the fixture and played at Moses Gate on a pitch that was only slightly drier but a lot smaller and bumpier!
The Crusaders started well but lost Paul after 3 minutes with a twisted ankle. Mat lasted only slightly longer before his back forced him off. Fortunately Paul was fit enough to return and slotted back into his left-wing berth. The Crusaders were having the best of the early exchanges, testing the keeper with a few shots and it was against the run-of-play that MG scored. The left winger wriggled past Cameron and Bill and his cross was put past Clayton into the far corner. The Crusaders were knocked back by this, lost control of the midfield for the rest of the half and had to soak up a lot of Avenger's pressure.
The Crusaders regrouped at half-time despite losing Cameron to a “lower stomach” injury and Taylor to a tight thigh muscle. The Avenger's keeper was tested on a few occasions but following some sustained pressure the ball broke down-field, Chris and Clayton left it to each other and the ball was toe-poked home. This time the Crusader's remained focussed, Matthew moved to the right flank and immediately began to find space. Macauley and Jack Ayres both stung the keeper's fingers before Callum swivelled and hit a sweet half-volley just under the bar (no mean feat in a seven foot goal!) The Avengers now seemed to be hanging on for the win so, with 5 minutes to go the Crusaders threw on an extra striker in the shape of Sam. Pressure was mounting when Paul chipped a cross the Matthew who controlled the ball well and struck a left foot shot past the keeper. Both teams had chances in added time but the game ended even.
Man of the match went to Jack Ashton for a solid performance at left back particularly in the first half when he gave the Avengers' right winger little opportunity at all. Jack Ayres gave another strong display in midfield as did Matthew, Ash did everything but hit the target and Paul was brave to play to the end with a very sore ankle.
Final score MG Avengers 2-2 Crusaders.
